Start + Grow Your NonprofitWhat is a nonprofit? What do we mean by tax-exempt? What’s the difference between a public charity and a private foundation? How big is the nonprofit sector in the United States and in our local community? And how does the nonprofit sector interact with other sectors to meet community needs?
Having a basic understanding of the nonprofit sector is an essential element of effective board service. This board bootcamp session provides a great introduction for new board members and nonprofit executives, and a great refresher for current board members to better understand:
What is a nonprofit
Basic nonprofit governance structure
Common misconceptions about nonprofits
The size and scope of the nonprofit sector in the United States, and how this compares to other sectors of society
The essential function of a nonprofit board of directors
In addition, this session will provide a basic overview of the nonprofit sector in East Central Illinois, drawing on data insights from a recent report completed by students from Gies College of Business at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. Highlights include:
The number of 501(c)(3) public charities in East Central Illinois at present and over time
An analysis of nonprofits by subsector (such as the arts, environment, health or human services)
A breakdown of nonprofits by annual revenue
A comparison of how the size and scope of the nonprofit sector in Champaign-Urbana compares with other Midwest university towns
Nonprofit board members, executives and senior staff can use this information to uncover current trends among nonprofits within East Central Illinois, understand what other nonprofit stakeholders are working to meet similar community challenges, and how to tap into capacity building resources and training opportunities to support your organization’s growth and development.
Presented in partnership with the Community Foundation of East Central Illinois. CFECI encourages and receives contributions establishing endowments for the long-term benefit of east central Illinois.
